World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary The Rev’d Prof Dr Jerry Pillay strongly condemned a violent attack on a humanitarian aid convoy in North Darfur, Sudan, which took place on the night of 3 June.
“This brutal assault claimed the lives of five humanitarian workers, left many others injured, and destroyed lifesaving supplies intended for famine-stricken communities,” said Pillay. “We grieve the loss of these dedicated individuals who gave their lives in service to others and express our deepest condolences to their families, colleagues, and organizations.”
At a time when the people of Sudan—particularly in North Darfur—are facing extreme hunger, displacement, and violence, such attacks represent an affront to human dignity and a gross violation of international humanitarian law, Pillay observed.
“The WCC calls upon all parties to the conflict to uphold their moral and legal obligations to protect humanitarian personnel and ensure safe, and unrestricted access to those in need,” he said. “We also urge the international community and religious leaders—across all faiths—to raise their voices against the targeting of aid workers and to advocate for peace, protection, and justice.”
