Waterford’s Canterbury College is inviting School Captains and Vice Captains from South East Queensland Anglican schools to attend an Anglican Schools Student Leaders Symposium, with this year’s theme being “Embracing Joy”
Waterford’s Canterbury College is inviting School Captains and Vice Captains from South East Queensland Anglican schools to attend an Anglican Schools Student Leaders Symposium, with this year’s theme being “Embracing Joy”.
Head of the Canterbury Centre for Entrepreneurship and Learning Greg Wacker, who is organising the symposium, is passionate about the event’s objectives.
“We believe in the potential of young people,” Mr Wacker said.
“We know that when their community embraces and supports them, they thrive – allowing them to achieve remarkable things, like solving significant problems and creating new assets beyond our current imagination.
“It is hoped that by embracing joy, our young people will appreciate the true meaning of servant leadership and understand their Anglican identity and purpose.”
Students will hear from expert leadership development keynote speakers, including former refugee and founder of Rich Dreams Duku Forè GAICD and Director of Mission for the Anglican Schools Commission The Rev’d Richard Browning.
The day’s vision is to bring student leaders together, nurture school relationships and support leaders in embracing the joy of difference and diversity that help strengthen Anglican unity.
Canterbury College’s Spirituality Captain Prince Cubahiro said that the keys to joy are kindness and compassion.
“Embracing joy means to embrace yourself and those around you – joy comes from the kindness we share towards one another, the loving and compassionate words we spread,” Prince said.
“Joy is the feeling of belonging.”
Canterbury College’s other student leaders join Prince in looking forward to the symposium and exploring the richness of diversity and community.
“Whilst I am excited to network with other leaders, I am most looking forward to learning about their ideas and goals for 2022. By discussing their aspirations and plans for 2022, I hope to identify some aspects that I can bring to Canterbury and the Student Leadership Team,” Social Justice Captain Jordan Grant said.
“It’s a cliché that is said repeatedly yet rings with truth ‘everyone is unique and special in their own way.’ Our differences and individualism make us who we are. We all have something different to bring to the table. For that, we should recognise and celebrate the differences we have, which help make our world that extra bit more interesting,” College Captain Madisen-Jade Iva said.
“It is important to celebrate diversity as diversity helps to shape how we view the world around us. As a diverse and multicultural nation, celebrating each other’s differences and traditions widens our perspectives on life and helps us to embrace everyone’s individuality,” College Captain Kristina Mrsic said.
As Canterbury College is hosting this experience, the cost of attendance is free for student leaders, with morning tea and lunch also provided.
Up to four student leaders from each school are invited to attend and full dress uniform is required.
Schools will need to organise their transport to and from Canterbury.
Schools may choose to send a staff member along; however, this is not essential as Canterbury will have sufficient supervisory staff.
The 2022 Anglican Schools Student Leaders Symposium is scheduled for Friday 18 March 2022 from 8.30am for a 9.00am start, concluding at 2.45pm. The event will be held at Canterbury College’s Canterbury Functions Centre at 182 Old Logan Village Road, Waterford. Register online by 5pm Friday 11 March.
