Archbishop Phillip Aspinall invested David Ratcliff (grand-nephew of Canon Garland OBE) with the Canon Garland Memorial Medal during an impromptu ceremony in his St Martin's House office in early October. David Ratcliff and daughter Elizabeth Binks flew from their homes in Hexham, England for their first Australian visit to attend the renaming of a commuter overpass to honour Canon Garland, the man often referred to as the ‘Architect of Anzac Day’.
In mid-October, the Anglicare Sunshine Coast office held a digital class teaching clients the skills needed to use technology, such as using a computer, the internet and how to stay safe online. We even finished off with a game of Technology Bingo! Anglicare is taking part in the Australian Government, Be Connected program which is an Australia-wide initiative empowering all Australians to thrive in a digital world.
Bishop Jeremy Greaves celebrated a Eucharist with the Lutwyche Anglican Church community on Sunday 27 October, celebrating with those who were confirmed and farewelling The Rev'd Sandra Kjellgren after 17 years of service as parish priest.
As the final bows were taken, St Andrew's Anglican College sent their congratulations to the cast and crew of the Primary School Musical, The Little Mermaid. It was a fabulous production and the students are to be commended for making the most of the opportunity, stepping outside their comfort zone. Thank you to the staff involved, in particular, Heather Swift, Ben Dean, Elena Katahanas, Chelsey Eunson, Sue Patterson and the many others who assisted, including the very creative Visual Art staff and students. The costumes, sets and props were wonderful and special thanks goes to Cal Stephens and Judith Tappenden and their merry sewing team, Mr Ian Martin for the sailing boat and Mr Kirn for the photography. Also we give our thanks to the orchestra – staff, students and guest musicians gave up so much of their time to rehearse and make the live theatre experience complete.
On Friday 18 October, 13 Indigenous Glennie School students, along with five staff, had the pleasure of attending the annual Yalari Celebration Dinner in Brisbane. The inspiring evening was an opportunity for Yalari to showcase many incredible Indigenous student achievements. The students celebrated with family, friends and valued supporters who together assist Yalari to educate and empower Indigenous children to change and bring about a brighter future. Yalari is a not-for-profit organisation offering secondary education scholarships at leading Australian boarding schools for Indigenous children from regional, rural and remote communities. A lovely evening was had by all.
Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Woolloongabba celebrated their 150th anniversary on 19 October. Function organisers Ann and Ian Lacey are pictured with Ann's bridal gown from their 1984 wedding. The first Holy Trinity church was a simple wooden building built in 1869 that was blown down in a storm in 1874. The second, also timber, was burnt down in a fire in 1929. The present church was built in 1930 of brick with stucco finish in a Spanish Mission, Romanesque style. Holy Trinity Church is one of the oldest churches in Brisbane. On Saturday 19 October as part of the sesquicentennial celebrations, a celebratory cocktail party was held in the adjacent modern church hall, Trinity Place. It was a lovely occasion with a great array of beautiful food available for grazing, some rather interesting drinks, a string quartet accompaniment and history display. Fr Ron Paschke and Ian Lacey told the church's history and shared personal experiences of the historic church. The church itself was open and there was a wonderful display of wedding dresses of brides who had been married there, dating as far back as 1942 (with a bride’s mother’s veil from 1907). Overall it was a wonderful festive occasion that was enjoyed by all.
While in the UK in early October, Archbishop Phillip Aspinall met with the International Commission for Anglican–Orthodox Theological Dialogue Communiqué (ICAOTD Committee). During his visit, the Archbishop went on an excursion to one of the oldest churches in the English speaking world – St Martin’s (pictured) and visited St Augustine’s Church and his grave.
Hip, hip hooray! Symes Grove Residential Aged Care celebrated its first birthday on Sunday 17 October. The birthday was celebrated with a garden party where residents, families, staff and friends donned fancy hats and planted a tree to symbolise the first successful year and growth of the home. What a gorgeous day to celebrate our lovely community and home at Symes Grove.
The Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp for children with special needs was run by Churchie in conjunction with St Margaret’s in the recent school holidays. Guests Milli and Isabella enjoy frisbee on The Flat with St Margaret’s companions, Isobel and Eva.

In October, Coomera Anglican College's Senior Worship Band (now affectionately known as 'Angligang') worked with acclaimed singer/songwriter duo Carter and Carter to write their own song based on this year’s College theme, Growing Faith, Hope and Love. The results were astounding! After finalising the lyrics, the students created the melody, chord progression and band arrangement in three hours. The song will now feature regularly at worship and will be recorded on the Angligang CD. The CAC Senior Worship Band is a contemporary worship ensemble that aims to connect with youth culture. Consisting of 22 students from Years 10-12, the band comprises of four guitarists, two keyboard players, a bass player, a drummer, a cellist, a violinist, and twelve singers. Angligang is a service-based ensemble that actively supports worship in the life of the College. In addition to playing for student worships each week, the students also provide music for House Worships, Baptism and Confirmation services, Staff Eucharists and other community services. Angligang exemplifies the College’s mission to inspire excellence in service and faith.

Neil Barringham, Manager of A Place to Belong, sharing his experience working to include people who have been marginalised so they can experience acceptance, friendship and respect, as part of the Mental Health Awareness Week Service at St John's Cathedral on 8 October. Neil is pictured with The Rev'd Dr Ann Solari, The Very Rev'd Dr Peter Catt and The Rev’d Canon Linda McWilliam, Director of Mission for Anglicare. A Place to Belong is working to build inclusion for people who experience mental health challenges.

St Luke the Evangelist is often depicted as a winged ox, hence the ox masks in the photos. I preached on St Luke the Physican and the need for healing in our world and in the life of the church."
It was fantastic to see both the Fraser Coast Anglican College Year 7/8 and Junior debating teams compete in the State Finals on the weekend of 26-27 October. Both teams were runners up in their prospective age categories, and demonstrated growth in both confidence and debating prowess throughout the year. A huge congratulations to the following students in the 7/8 team: Arianna, Tharuk, Xavier and Bhanuka (pictured). Congratulations, also, to the Junior team: Charlie, Simeon, Lara and Toivo. They look forward to another successful year of debating next year.

Archbishop Phillip Aspinall visited Christ Church, St George recently to celebrate a Sunday service, where he also preached. The Rev'd Paul Mitchell presented the Archbishop with a thank you gift on behalf of the congregation.
On Sunday 6 October at St Mark’s, Clayfield young people gathered for questions and a discussion after the service with guest speaker, Mark Delaney from Australian Religious Response to Climate Change.
As part of Season of Creation celebrations, a Blessing of the Animals was celebrated at St Anne’s, Highfields on the afternoon of 6 October. They were joined by 10 very polite puppies, a cat called Tiger and a very relaxed kitten, who slept through nearly the entire service!
