The Property Team and St Andrew’s Anglican Church, South Brisbane have collaborated to redevelop the church’s old rectory site in Highgate Hill, with sale proceeds going back into the parish and towards a growth fund to support the Church’s mission.
Between early 2018 and late 2019, the ACSQ’s Property Team, part of the Finance and Diocesan Services Commission, collaborated closely with clergy and volunteers from St Andrew’s to redevelop the old rectory site into a new rectory and apartment complex.
Development Manager Shane Djordjewitsch said that working through options and identifying ways to add value to the church were the highlights of his work on the redevelopment process.
“The highlight for me was working with the parish in exploring options around replacing a tired rundown asbestos-riddled building with a new townhouse that meets the Diocesan rectory standards,” Mr Djordjewitsch said.
“The process also included exploring value-add propositions and that came in the way of developing eight upmarket apartments on the same site for sale on the open market.
“Some of the profit generated out of the sale proceeds will go back to the parish and there will be a contribution towards the going for growth fund to help promote Anglican causes and values.
“It was also great to work with a professional consultant team who shared in the same vision.”
The development consists of eight residential apartments, each comprising three bedrooms, two bathrooms and two secure basement carparks and storage areas.

Rector of St Andrew’s The Rev’d Alan Moore said that he was pleased with the outcome of the project and the way that the Property Team managed the development of the site.
“The highlight for me was to see the project completed and our associate priest in residence in the rectory unit after many years of planning,” The Rev’d Moore said.
“The Property Team members were immensely helpful during the planning and construction phases of this project, and we were regularly updated by Shane as the building progressed and eight of the units were sold.”
Parish councillors and churchwardens typically volunteer considerable time in such redevelopments and their contributions are invaluable, both for parish clergy and Property Team members.
Parish Council member and Churchwarden Bruce Wilson, who was key to the redevelopment’s success, said that he especially enjoyed the cooperative nature of the project.
“My role in the development, initially as Parish Councillor and then as Churchwarden, was to help oversee the implementation of the project at the St Andrew’s end.”
“Shane did a fabulous job as Property Development Manager, as he was always available, professional and a delight to work with.
“The highlight of the project for me was the monthly meetings held between church representatives and Shane and Group Manager, Property Hiro Kawamata, which kept the parish up to speed and enabled us to adapt when required.
“This collaborative approach helped to simplify and streamline the whole process.”
The Property Team continues to work across our Diocesan community, ensuring that development projects have a strong missional foundation for sustainable and useful outcomes.
Mr Djordjewitsch said that his team, led by Mr Kawamata, is able to help parishes with all property-related processes and projects.
“The Diocese Property Team has the necessary skills and capabilities to assist parishes in property related matters and issues,” Mr Djordjewitsch said.
“I am currently working alongside St Matthew’s Church, Sherwood with the potential to redevelop a portion of the site with childcare, thereby creating a more vibrant community and an additional income stream.
“The income generated helps to sustain the parish into the future through upkeep of buildings, particularly heritage buildings, as well as contributing to the parish’s mission through engagement with the community.”
