Is religion the cause of violence?

“The problem is that in a highly secular culture religious ritual has been largely banished from the public space and the nation-state has assumed the mantle of the manager of violence,” says St Francis College Scholar in Residence The Right Rev’d Professor Stephen Pickard, who will be giving the 2021 Felix Arnott Lecture

"I also spoke to Bishop Cam and asked about the priesthood. Bishop Cam told me that I needed to have a call, the support of my wife, and the support of my congregation to become a priest. With the support of Mary and my congregation, I started studying theology at St Francis College in 2019" (Mamuor Kunpeter at Roscoe Library on 21 July 2021)

My vocation story: from Lost Boy to finding God in the desert

“The desert is a significant place where people can meet God. Even before Jesus, holy people used to withdraw themselves from their families and live in deserts to meet with God. I encountered God for the first time when I travelled the deserts and slept in deserts as a child – the desert is where my intimacy with him, before I became Christian, began,” says St Francis College formation student Mamuor Kunpeter, as Vocations Month continues

“We will be discussing theology in the context of people, moments and movements in early modern Europe…It is only through understanding who we were that we can think critically about who we are and about who we want to be…Firstly we will be looking at the origins of religious fracturing…In the second half of the course…we will be focusing on the Reformation in England and the rest of the British Isles,” says St Francis College lecturer Dr Sheilagh Ilona O’Brien
